'Jittery' Nicky Henderson reveals Cheltenham Festival fears as Constitution Hill spearheads redemption bid

Nicky Henderson admits he’s facing a jittery three weeks ahead of the Cheltenham Festival.

The master trainer unveiled stable stars such as Constitution Hill and Jonbon at his media morning in Seven Barrows ahead of the 2025 showpiece. However, with 21 days still to go, Henderson has already been dealt a blow with outstanding young talent Sir Gino ruled out of the meeting and fighting for his wellbeing due to an infection.

The handler also suffered misery 12 months ago when, in the build-up to the Festival, illness ripped through his yard and left him without a single winner across the entire four-day showpiece. Henderson knows setbacks can occur at any point and told Record Sport: “I certainly get nervous about it all. Yeah, of course we get excited. We look forward to it within reason. We don’t really look forward to the next three weeks, but, when we get there, it is good.

“A week ago, we were very good and then we’ve lost poor old Sir Gino, who has had to withdraw, which is a bit of blow because he is a very, very talented horse. So it just shows what it’s like. It can happen to any one of them all the way down the line and, the last three weeks, everybody gets a bit jittery.”

The problems which hit the yard a year ago meant Henderson was unable to add to his tally of 73 winners at the Cheltenham Festival. But he added: “It’d make you more determined, but I’m not sure what you can do about it. You can’t suddenly go out and say I’m going to work them harder because we didn’t have a good year. You have just have to keep your head down, keep doing what you think you know you ought to be doing.”
