Jimmy Garoppolo: Update emerges on 49ers quarterback's injury recovery

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly closer to having his future resolved following an update to his injury situation. 

All signs are that Jimmy Garoppolo’s time with the San Francisco 49ers organisation is set to come to and end at some point in the very near future. The wheels were pretty much in motion back at the 2021 NFL draft when the team selected Trey Lance with the 3rd overall pick, trading up in order to get him no less, making it pretty clear that they think he will be their quarterback of the future.

That mantle was meant to belong to Garoppolo though, as back in 2017 the 49ers gave up a 2nd round pick in order to acquire him from the New England Patriots, and despite having a pretty rough time with injuries, missing large parts of the 2018 and 2020 seasons, he has still managed to put up 11,162 passing yards and 66 touchdowns for them in the regular season and helped them reach the Super Bowl back in 2019 before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Clearly though, those injuries have taken prominence when it comes to what the organisation thinks of him, that’s why they are making the move towards Lance as the man to lead them forward.

With Lance seemingly the man of the future, barring the unlikely scenario that Garoppolo will be willing to be the team’s backup similar to how he was back in New England with Tom Brady, then the reasonable move is to trade him away.

Writing in a column for SI.com, NFL reporter Albert Breer hinted that a move could start to come to fruition in the very near future, as he hinted that things could start to move in motion in July after Garoppolo has started throwing and recovered from surgery to his rotator cuff.
