Jim Goodwin names his Dundee United non negotiable as Tannadice style must ensure 'boring' label isn't applied

Jim Goodwin doesn't want his Dundee United side to be described as 'boring' after picking up the Scottish Championship Glen's Vodka Manager of the Month for a second consecutive month.

The Tangerines had entertainment in abundance as a fine October saw them score 14 goals conceding just once as the Irishman revealed the rigorous demands he puts on his players weekly to set the heather alight in the second tier.

He said: "We want to be a possession-based team but don't want to be boring, we always have a box with four players but attack with six players, get more bodies in the box and encourage more forward runs. We tried to identify those situations where it's on to break lines and you've got to have good players. I'm very fortunate with the squad we've got here at Dundee United. The hardest thing in the goal is to create goal-scoring opportunities then be clinical when the opportunities come around.

"Apart from that first Arbroath game, we had three or four games after which we won by the odd goal here and there. We made slight changes to our set-up in terms of the full-backs pushing on and asking for them to be more advanced and positive on the ball and our two holding midfielders to sit on the game.

"It's important we have a balance and when we've attacked we haven't went gung-ho. I think the reaction from players when they give away possession is instant to try and go again.

"All of those are things that we've tried to bed in from first-day of pre-season. As a manager, you can have all these good ideas but you need the players to carry out the message, we've asked the players from day one to buy in to what we're trying to do.
