Jeremie Frimpong hits post Celtic milestone as Bayer Leverkusen star earns first Netherlands call up

Former Celtic full-back Jeremie Frimpong has been named in the senior Netherlands squad for the first time after earning rave reviews for his form with Bayer Leverkusen.

Frimpong left the Scottish Premiership for the Bundesliga in an £11 million move last January and has been a stand out performer down the right hand side this season for Die Werkself which has been been rewarded by a call up to Louis Van Gaal's side.

The 21-year-old also had the option of representing Ghana or England but has chosen the country of his birth.

The Netherlands face Denmark on March 26 before coming up against Germany three days later in two friendly matches.

Frimpong made 36 appearances during his two-year spell at Celtic and won the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup in the process.

In June 2020, Frimpong was voted Celtic's Young Player of the Year for season 2019-20 by the club's supporters.

The national team call up comes on the same week as news that German giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, as well as some of the bigger clubs in England and Spain, are keeping a very close eye on the defender, according to a report by German media outlet Sport1.

It is thought that Leverkusen, who sit third in Germany's top flight, would refuse to accept anything less than £25 million.
