'Jealous' teen who forced girlfriend to get his name tattooed on her is spared jail

A jealous and controlling teenager forced his girlfriend to get his name tattooed on her hand — because he was envious that she already had a tattoo showing the name of her deceased ex.

Connor Oldham, 18, waged a campaign of ‘verbal and emotional’ abuse against his partner, who said she felt ‘terrorised in her own home’. Oldham, of Sandgate Avenue in Clayton, also smashed up his girlfriend’s phone and strangled her for 90 seconds in another incident.

However, Oldham, appearing before Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday (November 27), was spared jail after Judge Geoffrey Lowe felt he could be rehabilitated. Instead, he was handed a suspended sentence, unpaid work, and rehabilitation activities.

Oldham ‘quickly became controlling and abusive’, prosecutor Julian Goode told courtroom 7, which ‘established a system where [the victim] felt terrorised in her own home’. His abuse started at the beginning of the relationship with verbal barrages, Mr Goode said.

“He called her a s**g and accused her of being unfaithful,” he said. “She would have a shower at home and he said it was because she had been with another man.”

Oldham’s controlling behaviour then stepped up a notch, Mr Good continued: “She had the name of an ex [tattooed] on her right hand who is sadly deceased.

“He pressurised her into getting a tattoo with his name. She paid for the tattoo and now his name is tattooed on the back of her right hand.”
