Jay Slater's funeral targeted by sick scammers

Online scammers have offered access to fake livestream of Jay Slater’s funeral, taking advantage of mourners as they request likes, follows and money.

The 19-year-old who went missing in a mountainous area of Tenerife on June 17, will be remembered at a funeral today (Saturday).

Missing persons charity LBT Global has now said they have had to 'endless work' in removing troll accounts that have been using the event to scam.

According to Matthew Searle, chief executive of LBT Global, some scam accounts were asking for 'donations'. In return, they were offering a fake livestream link to the funeral.

He said: "We are inundated with reports of these scams, and as fast as we can get the platforms to remove them, more appear. To be completely clear: there is no live stream of Jay's funeral and anyone claiming to offer one is a scam. It is so typical of the vile trolling this family have received for them to target something so special as a funeral."

Jay's funeral - described as a 'celebration of life service' is set to take place at Accrington Cemetery Chapel on Saturday at 10.30am before burial. In a statement issued through LBT Global, his family said 'if anyone would like to bring a single rose to place with Jay, they are more than welcome'.
