Jamie Carragher makes Liverpool FC claim after Manchester United collapse

Jamie Carragher has cast a damning verdict on Manchester United whilst comparing them to Liverpool during their wilderness years.

The Reds were arguably second best to United through Carragher’s Anfield career. It took 28 years for the club to lift the Premier League trophy and in most previous years, they were not serious title contenders.

United currently find themselves in a similar situation, Carragher said. However, following their 4-0 defeat at Anfield on Tuesday, he suggested that his Liverpool team never dipped as far as the Red Devils have.

The Sky Sports pundit described how Liverpool were always “trying to hang on to the coat tails” of United during their dominant years. But he argued that during that era, Liverpool were never as placid as United currently are.

He told the Gary Neville podcast: “What I saw there today - certainly in the first half - and what I saw in that first game at Old Trafford, I don’t think we ever stooped that low. We lost one time 4-0 at Old Trafford but, not making excuses, we got a man sent off after a minute. And we kept it 1-0 until about the 80th minute.”

He added: “We still had something about us, a personality, a character because we still actually won trophies in unbelievable circumstances when we weren’t one of the best teams.

“I couldn’t imagine this Manchester United team doing something out of the ordinary, like an Istanbul or winning an FA Cup or still beating Liverpool or Man City in a one-off game.”
