James Jeggo slams 'drastically bad' Hibs as alarming stat lays Easter Road inconsistencies bare

James Jeggo insists Hibs can’t allow a nightmare day at the office to scupper their European dream.

The Australian midfielder wasn’t hiding from the fact Lee Johnson’s side turned in a shocker of a 90 minutes to slip to a third straight defeat and sixth in the table. With three games left before the split, the Easter Road side are just one point ahead of seventh-placed Livingston and have now lost to every side in the top flight in a season blighted by inconsistency.

Johnson’s side head to bottom side Dundee United next Sunday before hosting Hearts in a massive capital derby and completing the pre-split schedule away to St Johnstone. Jeggo said: “It was very disappointing. We were miles off the type of team we want to be against Motherwell. We had found a way of playing and the performances had been good, bar the Rangers game, over the last six games.

“So to be so drastically bad is disappointing and we need to get a grip quicksmart. It’s very tight so we can’t get caught up on what the other teams are doing, it’s about what we do.

“We know that we’re good enough to make sure we’re in that top six and if we get there we can be challenging for Europe. That doesn’t change on the back of today. But that performance can’t happen again if we want to achieve what we want to.”

Skipper David Marshall had an afternoon to forget between the sticks as he conceded a disastrous penalty and was beaten by two free-kicks. But Jeggo said: “One thing we have here is a really honest group. Players know when they haven’t played well. There are always discussions”
