Jack Grealish makes honest transfer admission as Leeds United prepare to fight off Aston Villa

Leeds United are set to move to tie Kalvin Phillips down to a new and improved long-term contract in the wake of recent transfer speculation involving the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United. England international midfielder Phillips, who earned the Three Lions’ player of the year award for 2021, has not been involved in any Premier League football since before Christmas because of a hamstring injury. It also struck down fellow key men Liam Cooper and Patrick Bamford.

The losses of such important players left Leeds facing up to a relegation battle and prompted the sacking of Marcelo Bielsa. They have, though, under new boss Jesse Marsch put two wins together in quick succession against Norwich and Wolves to give themselves a little breathing space at the bottom of the table.

Which division Leeds are playing in next season will be key to their hopes and chances of retaining boyhood fan Phillips. There are plenty of sides in the top flight, including Villa, Newcastle and West Ham, who have money to spend this summer and big ambitions to further progress into European competitions. They’re readying themselves for offers, especially if Phillips and Leeds do suffer relegation.

Former Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish admits he has found adapting to life at Manchester City "more difficult" than he first envisaged.
