Jack Catterall dismisses trilogy fight with Josh Taylor as he sets sights on elusive world title

Jack Catterall has ruled out at trilogy fight with Josh Taylor and insists that the chapter on their heated rivalry is "closed".

The Chorley boxer avenged his controversial defeat to former undisputed super-lightweight world champion Taylor with a points victory against the Scot in Manchester back in May, to get himself back into contention for world honours. The 31-year-old faces former American world champion Regis Prograis next month with the winner expected to get a shot at WBO title holder Teofimo Lopez.

In the wake of the loss to Catterall, Taylor's promoter Bob Arum was left livid with the judges scorecards on the night and has since called for a third bout between the pair to settle the rivalry once and for all. Catterall's promoter Eddie Hearn responded by insisting that his fighter's sole focus is on trying to finally get his hands on a world title but added that he would not rule out a trilogy fight further down the line.

However, Catterall himself has now came out to draw a line through his feud with Taylor and admits time is running out to achieve his goal of becoming a world champion. Speaking to SportsBoom, he said: "That chapter with Josh is closed. It’s a new chapter now.

"I’ve been sitting on the shelf for too long in the past. I didn’t want to be waiting until the back end of the year or maybe early next for a shot. I’ve had momentum and I don’t want to be waiting for fights that might not happen. It’s important I stay busy. After beating Josh, it was straight back to the gym.

“This is a huge fight for me and also for Regis (Prograis). It’s pivotal for both of us and it’s one that really excites me, probably the biggest it’s possible to get without a title being on the line."
