Jaap Stam sends Erik ten Hag transfer warning to Manchester United

Former Manchester United centre-back Jaap Stam believes Erik ten Hag is capable of bringing success back to Old Trafford, so long as he is financially backed in the transfer market.

Ten Hag was officially installed as United's new manager in April, picking up the baton from Ralf Rangnick as soon as the 2021/22 Premier League campaign reached its conclusion. He will meet the players for the first time when pre-season starts on June 27.

As things stand, however, the former Ajax manager will not be joined at Carrington next Monday by any new signings, with the club yet to complete its first deal of the summer transfer window. United are locked in talks with Barcelona over a move for midfielder Frenkie de Jong but are still yet to agree on a transfer fee.

United are keen to add several new faces to the squad this summer in a bid to put last term's failings behind them. And for former defender Stam, Ten Hag has the potential to repeat his Ajax success at Old Trafford — with the right support.

"We all know what he can do and what he has done over in Holland with Ajax," said Stam, as quoted by the Guardian. "Hopefully he can do the same now with United.

"Obviously, there are certain things that will need to be there for him to help him, maybe in terms of different players and personnel. But I think he's done a good job in Holland."

Ten Hag had plenty of success during his four-and-a-half-year tenure in Amsterdam, leading Ajax to six major trophies, including three league titles. Stam, however, has warned that his fellow countryman could experience facing some cultural differences as far as recruitment is concerned.
