Gregor Townsend will be hoping there's no place like Rome as he sends his Scotland Gladiators into Six Nations battle in the magnificent Olympic Stadium.

Scotland haven't finished in the top two of the championship since they won the Five Nations in 1999. But Townsend's troops are in with a real chance of that this year.

The dark blues could even come out on top with their final match against Ireland in what could be a winner-takes-all clash in Dublin next weekend.

But Townsend won't be getting ahead of himself as Scotland need a couple of things to happen for that to be possible both in Rome and in Ireland's clash against England.

First of all, Scotland have to control what they can in the earlier of the two fixtures and that means beating an ever-improving Azzurri under head coach Gonzalo Quesada.

Gregor Townsend hopes his side can find another level as they look to finish their Six Nations campaign strongly in their final two games.

Currently second in the table, they have Italy to face today and the nightly impressive Ireland in the final round of matches.

“Happy-ish,” Townsend said, reflecting on the campaign so far. He continued:

You’ve obviously got to be delighted for the team to beat England and retain the Calcutta Cup.

But in terms of performance, we’re a little bit away from what we know we can deliver. The first 45 minutes against Wales is probably still the best we’ve played.

We had elements of control throughout much of the France game and for the last 60 minutes of the England game. But there’s still a lot more to come from us.
