Italy to miss World Cup: England fans savage Euro 2020 winners on social media

Following their 1-0 capitulation against underdogs North Macedonia on Thursday evening, reigning European Championship holders Italy will not be part of the 2022 World Cup.

The Azurri broke English hearts when they pipped the Three Lions to the Euro 2020 crown on penalities just eight months ago at Wembley.

That fiercely contested final, though, was not without its controversy as many England fans will argue that Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini should have seen red for a cynical foul on Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

In the wake of Italy’s shocking failure to qualify for Qatar 2022, England fans on social media wasted no time in poking fun at the misfortune of Roberto Mancini’s men.

One of the more humourous memes assembled to celebrate the end of Italy’s World Cup dream saw an image of Chiellini fouling Saka edited to caption the Italian defender as ‘North Macedonia’ – and the impeded England man as ‘Italy going to the World Cup’.

Leonardo Bonucci famously riled England fans after the Euro 2020 final by bellowing “It’s coming to Rome,” into a nearby television camera, firing a shot at the Three Lions’ popular ‘It’s coming home’ anthem.

English supporters were never going to let this one slide. A fan on Twitter quickly mocked up an image of Bonucci screaming into the lens, boldly emblasioned with the message: ‘You’re going home’.

Others piped in with similar comments.

”It’s coming Rome though, is it not?’, one user jokingly asked, while another wrote in jest: ‘It’s coming Rome… it’s coming Rome… footballs coming Rome…’
