'It was like a blackout': Eurovision's Mae Muller on the truth behind UK's entry

As I sit down for 20 minutes with pop star and this year's Eurovision finalist Mae Muller, I wonder how I can possibly have enough time to cram in enough questions about her colourful music career to date.

In just a few years, the 26-year-old singer and songwriter has represented the UK at the song contest, released a list of hits, including Sigala's 'Feels This Good' and the notorious 'I Wrote A Song', has gone on the road a number of times and now completed her long-anticipated debut record.

And, despite our disappointing placement in Eurovision, Mae is keeping in good spirits. Her social media profiles have always been authentic, more recently sharing a video of her singing angelically in a stairwell with the comical caption 'I promise I can sing and 13th of May was just a glitch!!!'

Mae's biggest hit to date, 'I Wrote A Song' is a clever and autobiographical account of measuredly scribbling your feelings and emotions down when somebody 'does you wrong'. And Mae has given the M.E.N an exclusive preview of what it first sounded like when she headed into the studio - which you can hear in the video above.

Debuting at number three in the Official Big Top 40 and trending across the UK, the 'bad b***' track was the first Eurovision UK entry in over a decade to debut inside the Official Top 40 in its first week.

There is no hiding from Mae that I am a fan of hers. I remark about my love for the track, and fondly tell her about a night out I was on with friends in Manchester's Gay Village when, as we were leaving, I Wrote A Song started blasting through the speakers, and so we jolted back inside for one last bop on the dancefloor.
