'It took me becoming seriously ill and bed ridden to fall in love with my natural hair'

Mum-of-three Miselo Kunda has raised her children to be proud of and love their natural hair. However, her own relationship with her hair wasn’t always as healthy, and it wasn’t until she was bed ridden with a severe illness she came to embrace it in it's natural state.

From Crumpsall, 47-year-old Miselo is one of three sisters. Despite being incredibly talented and successful, Miselo always felt out of place amongst her sisters when it came to her hair, which led to a less than positive relationship with it.

“Growing up, I looked quite boyish.” She explained. “My younger sister had hair that grew all the way down her back and she used to do modelling. My hair did grow but not as long, so I discovered hair extensions.

"The ethos behind hair is that it's got to be long and flowy. It was in the 80s when everybody wanted long and flowy hair. Mine wasn't flowy, it was an afro.

“I found this hairstyle that looked a little like Beyonce's, they looked like blonde locks and I was getting compliments for it.

“At the same time I became a lot more successful. I attributed all this success to me having this hair. So for years I only ever wore those extensions over my natural hair.”

In 2017 the particular brand of hair extensions got discontinued, but Miselo soon found another one that was similar. However, soon after she began to fall ill with severe migraines and found lumps on her body.

The ill health continued for years. She was in and out of her doctor's office where she was diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency in 2020. Adrenal insufficiency also known as Addison
