"It's very clear to see" - Sky Sports reporter drops big Spurs claim involving Dier and Romero

Tottenham‘s two “elite” centre-backs are Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

Despite Spurs’ defensive problems throughout the campaign, the duo, who cost the club a total of £46.5m, have played a key part under Antonio Conte.

While Tottenham have generally been poor at the back all season, Dier and Romero have more than done themselves justice.

Dier made a catalogue of errors last season alongside Davinson Sanchez but has shown major improvements this term and looks at home playing in a back three.

His importance was epitomised by Spurs’ defensive frailties without him against Southampton and Wolves last month when Conte’s side conceded five goals and could have shipped plenty more had it not been for some poor finishing.

Furthermore, ex-Premier League man Glen Murray recently heaped praise on Dier by suggesting that Tottenham looked far better with him in the side, describing him as a “massive” player for Conte.

Meanwhile, Romero is enjoying a fine first campaign in English football. According to WhoScored, the Argentine makes the joint-most interceptions (1.4), third-most clearances (3.9) and second-most tackles (2.4) in the Tottenham squad.

Ben Davies has generally been the third part of Conte’s back three, but the Welshman has been up and down this season, with his performance in the defeat to Wolves a particular low point for him.

Therefore, Bridge believes that Dier and Romero are the standout defenders at the club right now.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it’s very clear to see, and I’m sure the manager thinks the same, that Tottenham’s two elites are Dier and Romero, and the rest are expendable.”
