Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo will need to accept Erik ten Hag’s appointment as the club’s new manager if he wants to be a success under the Dutchman, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Ten Hag was finally confirmed as the man to replace Ralf Rangnick in the Old Trafford dugout on Thursday morning.

Ronaldo returned to United to much fanfare last summer after 12 years away from the club.

He made an instant impact by scoring twice against Newcastle in his first appearance back at Old Trafford, and he has gone on to net 22 goals across all competitions for the Red Devils. This has included two hat-tricks at home to Tottenham and Norwich.

However, there have been question marks about the 37-year-old’s work rate off the ball, with former teammate Wayne Rooney claiming earlier this month that the Portuguese icon does not offer much other than being a goal threat.

Ten Hag has guided Ajax to major success in recent years by getting his team to press high up the pitch, which is not necessarily a strength of Ronaldo’s at this stage of his career.

Jones has hinted that Ronaldo may have to adapt his game when the new boss arrives ahead of next season.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Ronaldo is going to have to accept the situation. How much he knows of ten Hag, I don’t know. But, it’s up to him to do his homework, understand his style of football, understand his philosophies.”

There have been reports that ten Hag is not convinced that Ronaldo will be able to adapt to his approach, which may be concerning for the experienced striker.

However, there were similar worries when Rangnick became interim coach, and Ronaldo has still managed to make some useful contributions
