“It’s the right thing” – Carlton Palmer gives verdict on West Brom’s player decision

Summer gives Steve Bruce the perfect opportunity to assess his West Brom squad ahead of the 2022/23 Championship campaign and make the necessary additions. 

The Baggies will be hoping to sweep this season under the carpet and return stronger when the new campaign starts at the end of July.

Striving for a better campaign, Steve Bruce has already made a couple of big decisions regarding the futures of two of the more experienced members of the squad, with Andy Carroll and Romaine Sawyers being made available on a free transfer.

Answering if he believes it is the right decision to cut ties with the latter, Carlton Palmer told FLW: “There’s no point triggering the clause, if you don’t think he’s going to be part of your squad for next season.

“Because you’ve got your budget for next season and if he’s not going to be part of your squad, then he’s taking up part of your budget.

“Like I said, Steve will have a clear picture of what he wants for next season, and what he needs to be successful.

“So if Romaine (Sawyers) doesn’t fit into that, then it’s the right thing to let him go on on a free.”

The verdict 

Seemingly heading into a new direction, it is not too much of a surprise that the Baggies are going to proceed without the 30-year-old.

Still possessing excellent ability, Sawyers is someone who could be a great pick-up within the Championship, with his contract set to expire next month.

In what was undoubtedly a difficult decision for the Baggies boss to make, Bruce will know what he needs to do, and what he intends to do when it comes to preparing best for the new season.
