"It's a shock": Sadness as woman, 28, dies after homes evacuated along street

Neighbours have spoken of their devastation after a 28-year-old woman was found dead inside a home in Bolton.

The tragic discovery was made when police responded to a concern for welfare check in the Halliwell area on Saturday (August 5).

Upon arrival, emergency services evacuated nearby homes on Huxley Street after reports of a possible gas leak.

But in an update today, Greater Manchester Police said their initial report of a leak 'proved to be incorrect'.

Neighbours who were evacuated were allowed back into their homes after checks of the area were made, the M.E.N understands.

But sadly, the force confirmed a 28-year-old woman was found dead inside one property on the street.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious.

Locals said police, paramedics, fire crews and workers from the gas network owner Cadent flooded the street.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, one neighbour, who did not wish to give his name, recalled the moment he was ordered to evacuate his home.

“They told me I had to leave my house for half an hour because they had to check the property for gas,” the 63-year-old said.

“I stood here and let them do what they had to do. They gave me the all clear and I went back in.

“You could tell by what was going on that it was something serious. It’s a bit of a shock.”

Another neighbour said the road was cordoned off while emergency services dealt with the incident.

“All the fire engines and police cars came straight away,” he added. “I just wondered what was going on.

“It’s a shock, really. They cordoned around four houses off to stop people going up there.
