'It just didn't make sense': Zwane opens up on romantic first season collapse as Chiefs boss

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has attributed the club's struggles in the DStv Premiership last season to a series of injuries.

Zwane, a former Amakhosi midfielder and club legend, inked a three year deal as he was entrusted to turn around the fortunes of the Soweto giants.

The 49-year-old was warmly welcomed by the club and the fans but his romantic ascendance to boss tuned sour.

The team concluded the campaign without a trophy, finishing in fifth place, much to the disappointment of loyal supporters who called for Zwane's removal.

As the new season approaches, uncertainty looms over Zwane's position as head coach when the 2023/24 Premiership commences.

Reflecting on his first season in charge, Zwane expressed his thoughts in an interview with Kaizer Chiefs TV.

"We wanted to make sure that the project succeeds. [But] we ended the season on a very, very low note after we started very, very well. It’s just that things were not consistent. The fluctuation of results also unsettled us," said Zwane.

"To sum it up all, I would say injuries hindered our progress this past season and unfortunately it's something we couldn't control, we couldn't control injuries.

"Football is a contact sport and anything can happen. I've never seen so many injuries in one season. We lost two players at some point, who collided with each other – it just didn't make sense."

Despite the challenges faced, Zwane managed to guide Kaizer Chiefs to the semi-finals of both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup competitions.

He added: "As I said, injuries were the enemy of progress."It was for sure a tough one, but everything happens for a reason. We are all part of the game.
