"It does my head in" - Paul Merson questions Man Utd's obsession with Mauricio Pochettino

Paul Merson remains perplexed as to why Mauricio Pochettino is so heavily linked with the Manchester United job questioning what he has achieved throughout his managerial career.

The Argentine is among the favourites to take over at Old Trafford come the summer.

Pochettino, who spent over five years as Tottenham boss, was linked with the role before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed in 2019.

In north London the 49-year-old continued to compete with the Premier League's elite despite having far fewer resources, but ultimately failed to win a trophy before his departure.

His work in PSG has hardly caught the eye, yet he remains one of the most highly sought-after coaches around.

That school of thought has caused Merson to question why, with Pochettino's CV by no means littered with trophies and accolades.

He told Sky Sports: "I don’t understand why Manchester United would be waiting for Mauricio Pochettino. I don’t get it. If Pochettino doesn’t win the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain, why would they be going in for him?

"You’ve got to remember he failed to win the French league last year, too. That’s virtually impossible to do.

"Everybody keeps saying they need to go out and get Pochettino but I don’t understand why.

"It does my head in. It’s all I ever hear. What did he do? He got Tottenham to the final of the Champions League and his side finished third one year in the Premier League."

Ralf Rangnick is set to play a part in helping pick the man who will replace him this summer, provided he does step aside as expected.

United are in danger of missing out on the top four with the scale of the job at hand clear for all to see.
