Issues facing Football Review Committee

RTÉ GAA analyst Eamonn Fitzmaurice discussed the issues facing the new Football Review Committee, of which he is a member, on League Sunday last night.

The 2014 All-Ireland winning manager is part of a big-hitting committee, under the chairmanship of Jim Gavin, with James Horan and Malachy O'Rourke also involved.

While Fitzmaurice says the grouping haven't met up yet, he said his own preference was for rule tweaks which create more contests and collisions rather than methodical possession based play.

In Fitzmaurice's estimation, packed defences were the root cause of this turn in the game, with teams having fewer forwards in an advanced position to whom they can kick direct ball. The heavily manned defences also militate against long ball, with teams having to carefully pick apart the opposition in a more measured fashion.

Proposals suggested included keeping three forwards inside both 45s, with the long-range point being awarded 0-02 also being noted.
