But clubs are running out of time to agree on fees with another club as well as personal terms with the player. Most of the work should be done by now.

Instead, many teams might be best served looking towards the bargain bucket of free agents.

Despite the domestic season starting tomorrow in England – and in the next week around Europe – there are still several players available on a free transfer having left their previous club on a free transfer.
