Irish-qualified Jager named in All Blacks XV squad to face Ireland A

Oli Jager could face Ireland A next month after the former Blackrock College student was named in the All Blacks XV squad for their northern hemisphere tour next month.

Born to an Irish mother and Dutch father, Jager spent many of his younger years in Kildare, but when he failed to earn a place in the Leinster academy, he moved to New Zealand in 2013 and has become a key player for the Crusaders in recent years.

The Irish qualified 27-year-old started in his side's Super Rugby Pacific final triumph against the Blues in Auckland in June.

"I grew up supporting Leinster but you always knew, after watching Super Rugby, the Crusaders were something special," he said last month after signing a contract extension until 2024.

The prop has been named in the All Blacks XV squad, a newly-created team by New Zealand Rugby and aims to serve as a pathway to international rugby, for games against Ireland A at the RDS on Friday, 4 November followed by a visit to Twickenham a week later to face the Barbarians.

Jager has made no secret of his desire to play for the All Blacks, and his performances in a dominant Crusaders side has pushed his case for international recognition.

He played against the Bristish and Irish Lions in 2017 when Warren Gatland’s side played the Crusaders.

"We are expecting an intense challenge from both Ireland A and the Barbarians. These two fixtures will allow players to showcase what they have and put their best foot forward on an international stage," All Blacks XV head coach Leon MacDonald said.
