IRFU appoint Aled Walters as athletic performance coach

The IRFU have landed a major coup, as they confirmed the appointment of Aled Walters as the new Head of Athletic Performance with the senior men's team.

Walters returns to Irish rugby having spent six years in the same role with Munster between 2012 and 2018, and replaces Jason Cowman, who has moved on after 12 years in the role.

Walters departed Munster in March 2018 to link back up with Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber, and was part of the Springboks’ backroom team for their World Cup win in 2019, before joining the Leicester Tigers in 2020 where he was involved in a Premiership title win.

Steve Borthwick brought Walters with him when he was appointed England head coach in 2023, but he’s now set to link up with Andy Farrell’s coaching staff ahead of the Autumn Nations Series.

"We are delighted that Aled has agreed to join the Ireland team," Farrell said.

I know how excited he is to return to Ireland and hit the ground running and I’m confident that he’ll play an important role in the squad as we embark on a busy international season, starting with the Autumn Nations Series this November.

"Aled replaces Jason Cowman who departed after the Guinness Six Nations success in March. Jason contributed a huge amount to Irish rugby over 15 years and we thank him for his incredible service over that time."
