Ireland's T20 World Cup qualification confirmed with a ball being bowled

Ireland's qualification for next year's T20 World Cup has been confirmed after today's match with Germany was rained off in Edinburgh.

The team had already beaten Italy, Denmark, Austria and Jersey in their previous qualifiers and needed just one more point from their remaining two fixtures to secure their spot in the USA and West Indies in 2024.

The abandonment today gave them the point they needed ahead of a final qualifier against Scotland tomorrow, which will now act only to decide who tops the group.

"While it's true that we'd rather have achieved qualification on the field today, we're delighted to have achieved our primary objective of qualifying for next year's T20 World Cup," captain Paul Stirling said.

"We came to Scotland with a clear plan and style of play we wanted to implement, and I think we delivered on that front.

"So, we'll celebrate job done this afternoon, but there is a trophy on the line tomorrow and we are keen to continue that winning momentum going into the India T20 series next month."

Ireland have qualified for every T20 World Cup since 2009, making it to the Super 8 in their first tournament that year, and reaching the Super 12 last year.
