IPL news: Jos Buttler had to be reminded of Mankad incident

Rajasthan Royals officials were forced to remind Jos Buttler of his ‘Mankad’ run out at the hands of Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of the auction.

Ashwin joins England’s Jos Buttler in the Royals camp after being brought in on the first day of the IPL auction.

The England star was retained by the franchise, who decided to check that Buttler was alright with sharing a dressing room with the spinner.

A sportsmanship row had erupted between the two in 2019, when Ashwin ran out the star batsman at the non-striker’s end in a Mankad dismissal.

“We spoke to Jos prior to the auction and just talked through all of our prioritisation of players. Honestly he didn’t even think about it,” said Rajasthan chief executive Jake Lush McCrum.

“I had to sort of bring it up to check it was okay and he said it’s absolutely fine.”

Buttler’s England teammate Mark Wood will feature for Lucknow Super Giants. The paceman will earn more than $1 million for his exertions in the IPL.

Kent and England wicketkeeper batter Sam Billings went unsold at the auction.

Billings wasn’t the biggest name to miss out with the likes of David Miller and Steve Smith unable to attract a suitor.

England opener Jason Roy was picked up by the newly minted Gujarat Titans franchise.

Former Sunrisers man Jonny Bairstow will be heading to the Punjab Kings, who made a statement with their buys on the first day which included Proteas paceman Kagiso Rabada.

Multi-format England stars Ben Stokes and Joe Root opted not to throw their names into the auction as they commit to getting the Test side back on track.

The bulk of the English players available at the auction will go under the hammer on day two of the auction.
