'Interesting' - Alasdair Gold shares 'big' behind-scenes Romero claim at Spurs

Alasdair Gold has revealed Cristian Romero is trying to become a big presence at Tottenham Hotspur by talking to everyone at training despite his poor English.

Romero played the full 90 minutes for Spurs against Leicester City on Sunday – a game that the Lilywhites won 3-1 thanks to a brace from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane’s opener. With a SofaScore match rating of 7.4, Romero put in a solid display.

Speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, Gold revealed Romero’s attempts to become a strong presence at the club. He said: “He [Son] said that Romero’s made a real kind of determined effort to try and speak to everyone at the club all the time, despite the fact his English is not great.

“And he said that’s just been such a big part of how popular and how quickly he’s become [popular] into the squad, that even though his language skills are not the greatest, he’s really made this concerted effort not to just sit on the sidelines, and to be a big presence in the dressing room. And I think you see that – you see him becoming this dominating presence in the backline.”

TIF Thoughts on Romero…

Romero made the move to Tottenham from Atalanta in the summer, and at least initially, he struggled, with a hamstring injury hindering his progress early on. However, after recovering from that issue, he has started every single Premier League match, arguably becoming Spurs’ most dependable centre-back.

Not being able to speak English is understandable having not long moved from abroad, and ultimately, football is a universal language, so on the pitch, it should not be too much of an issue.
