Inter Miami interested in signing former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil amid Fenerbahce stand-off

Mesut Ozil could be on his way to MLS side Inter Miami with Fenerbahce ready to rip up the German’s contract.

Spanish publication AS reports that the former Arsenal playmaker’s future in Turkey is in question after the player reacted badly to getting subbed off at half-time in Fenerbahce’s game against Konyaspor last month, before the 33-year-old was left out of the squad entirely for their last match with Kayserispor.

Asked about the possibility of Ozil being released from Fenerbahce, the club’s president Ali Koc said: ‘We do not have that plan at the moment. This decision is not child’s play. The most important thing is Fenerbahce.’

However, a rift between player and club has been hinted at before, as just two months ago Koc said that ‘Ozil has to focus on football and Fenerbahce, since he has not met the expectations, they had of him so far.’

Ozil signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Turkish side in January 2021, having been previously exiled from the Gunners squad by Mikel Arteta, and has so far made 12 goal contributions in 37 games.

Miami are leading the race for Ozil’s signature, and he has expressed a desire to play in the United States before, but there is also interest from Championship side Hull City, whose new Turkish owner Acun Medya is said to be a close friend of the attacking midfielder.

Legendary ex-England captain David Beckham founded Miami in 2018, with the side currently managed by Phil Neville and boasting former Premier League stars Gonzalo Higuain, Kieran Gibbs and DeAndre Yedlin.
