Inside story of Sheffield United's promotion battle with Leeds and Newcastle told by key players
It's a day those fortunate to have been involved with will never forget. Sheffield United promoted and Sheffield Wednesday relegated.
On the hottest day in May since records began, it could not have gone any better for Blades fans. But even from a football point of view, the day was set up before a ball had even been kicked to be one of the most exciting and nail-biting final days of any season.
United travelled to Filbert Street in second place, level on 82 points with leaders Leeds and only two points clear of third-place Newcastle. Win and they were promoted, anything less and they would be looking nervously at what the Magpies were doing. Newcastle had a better goal difference so if they bettered United's result they would take their place.
And if United bettered the result of Leeds, they would go up as champions. It was a three-way tussle where anything could have happened.
United made the worst possible start, falling behind to an early goal but then roared back to lead 4-2 at half-time courtesy of goals from Paul Wood, Brian Deane, Tony Agana and Wilf Rostrum. Agana then added the icing on the cake in the second half and United were promoted.
