A three-year-old boy died after he was admitted to hospital with pneumonia, an inquest opening has heard.

Rayan Malik Maqbool passed away at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital on Masrch 4 this year after presenting with 'respiratory distress', Manchester Coroner's Court heard on Tuesday (March 19).

Area Coroner Zak Golombeck said the three-year-old was 'immunosuppressed' as a result of a previous liver transplant due to hepatomblastoma - a type of childhood liver cancer.

"Rayan was admitted to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital on February 8 presenting with respiratory distress," Mr Golombeck told the court.

"He was treated for PCP pneumonia and admitted to the paediatric intensive care ward. Sadly he died on March 4."

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is a serious infection caused by the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii. Most people who get PCP have a medical condition that weakens their immune system.

Mr Golombeck said he had requested 'additional evidence' from Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, and the file would be reviewed once evidence had been received.

Rayan's medical cause of death was listed as hepatoblastoma, contributed to by immunosuppression caused by a liver transplant. A ful inquest will be heard at a later date.
