Injured Alexander Zverev set to miss Wimbledon and will aim to return ahead of US Open – report

Alexander Zverev is set to be sidelined for up to eight weeks following the horrific injury he suffered during the semi-final at Roland Garros, ruling him out of Wimbledon.

The world No 3’s hopes of winning a maiden Grand Slam was ended in agonising fashion at the French Open on Friday as his ankle gave way after he slipped during the latter stages of the second set against Rafael Nadal.

He screamed as he slumped to the ground and left the court in a wheelchair before returning on crutches to announce his retirement.

On Saturday he gave an update as initial medical checks revealed that “it looks like I have torn several lateral ligaments in my right foot”, but added he will need to undergo further scans to determine the full extent of the injury.

Zverev had hoped the injury would not keep him out for too long as he vowed to find “the best and quickest way for me to recover”, but French paper L’Equipe reports that he is likely to be sidelined for between six and eight weeks.

With Wimbledon starting in three weeks’ time, it will rule him out of the grass-court Grand Slam, if the diagnosis is confirmed.

If his recovery goes according to plan, then the German is likely to return to action at the Canadian Open, which starts on August 8, or the Cincinnati Masters (August 14).

It means he will have a few matches under his belt on the hard courts
