India vs England: Jasprit Bumrah's Honest Response When Asked About Captaincy Ambitions

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah remains one of the most sought-after talents in the game. His speed, variations and accuracy make him an asset across the three formats of the game for Team India. Bumrah has also been seen as a captaincy option in the longest format of the game, and he has led the team in one Test, against against England. With captain Rohit Sharma well into thirties, the team management is looking for his successor in the long run. Bumrah, who is already a leader in the team, is open to taking up the responsibility if offered again.

"I did one game and it was the utmost honour," Bumrah said in an interview with The Guardian. "Playing Test cricket is great, captaining was even better. Yes, we lost but we were ahead in the match and I loved the responsibility. Sometimes as a fast bowler you go down to fine leg and switch off but I loved being involved in every decision, right in the thick of things. And given the opportunity, of course, who wouldn't?"

Not many fast bowlers have led national teams in the past. At present, Australia's Pat Cummins is one of the few pacers leading on the international stage. Bumrah does see himself walking down the road Cummins has taken.

"(Cummins) plays for Australia, the number of matches differs and that kind of thing. Not many [seamers] have done it before. But it's a good example that yes, fast bowlers are the smart ones, they do a hard job and they know what to do around the game," said Bumrah.

Bumrah had captained India in the rescheduled Edgbaston Test in March 2022. In the Test team, he has competition from KL Rahul for the leadership role. But, the day Rohit decides to step down, the pacer will definitely be one of the biggest contenders for the job.
