In talks: Newcastle advancing pursuit of 177 G/A "machine", he's better than Ekitike - opinion

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their pursuit of Timo Werner in the summer transfer window… 

According to The Mirror, the Magpies are now in advanced talks to sign the Germany international on loan for the 2022/23 campaign.

The report claims that Chelsea will insist on an obligation to sign the attacker on a permanent basis next summer to be part of any temporary deal.

It is stated that the Toon have an advantage over teams from abroad wanting to snap him up as he is desperate to make things work in the Premier League.

The Magpies are now chasing alternative forward options after they failed in an effort to bring Hugo Ekitike to the club. They attempted to sign him on a two-year loan with a £26m obligation to buy, only for Ligue 1 giants PSG to gazump them.

It is now time to forget about the Frenchman, though, as Werner – certainly in the short term – would be a better player for Eddie Howe.

Ekitike has only played 26 matches in his Ligue 1 career and is yet to show that he can adapt to a different league or prove himself over multiple campaigns. He did score ten goals and provide three assists in the French top-flight, but it remains to be seen whether or not that was a flash in the pan.

Werner, meanwhile, has proven his worth over the course of a number of seasons and in two countries. Talent scout Jacek Kulig previously dubbed him a “machine” as the German was firing in goals on a regular basis for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

He left his native country with a whopping 93 goals and 40 assists in 158 matches for the club in all competitions, whilst scoring 89 goals in 221 games in the German top-flight for all of his teams combined.
