"In Gerrard's thinking..." - Journalist drops intriguing AVFC captain verdict on £27m-rated star

John McGinn is in Steven Gerrard‘s thinking to be the next Aston Villa captain, believes journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Tyrone Mings is the Villans’ current skipper, but there has been a lot of doubt surrounding his future and the armband.

Gerrard recently told reporters that he would make a decision on Villa’s long-term captain in the summer.

“I think it is always important to get in among the group and see what they are like, every minute of every day, see who is the glue in the team, see who leads in the right way, see who leads through adversity, not just when the sun is shining, see who is prepared to go above and beyond and sets the right standard on a daily basis,” the Villa manager said last month (via The Guardian).

“We are still working that out. I still won’t rule out the option of someone coming in, who I know, who is also capable of being in the running.”

Gerrard did say that he is happy with Mings and suggested that the 29-year-old could keep hold of the armband.

At the same time, however, Football Insider has claimed that Villa are looking to sign a new centre-back to replace Mings in the team, which raises questions about the England international’s long-term role in the squad.

If Gerrard does decide to axe Mings as Villa captain, O’Rourke believes McGinn would be in the frame to succeed his team-mate.
