In-form Elgar puts Proteas in strong position at lunch on Day 1

In Gqeberha.

Proteas skipper Dean Elgar played with poise as he helped his side make a solid start on the opening day of the second Test against Bangladesh at St George's Park on Friday.

Elgar continued his fine form as he brought up his third consecutive half-century of the Test series as the Proteas reached 107/1 in 28 overs at lunch.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Elgar and partner Sarel Erwee combated the early pressure on an overcast and slow St George's Park wicket.

Elgar and Erwee put together a composed 52-run opening partnership as they took control of the morning's proceedings in Gqeberha.

Bangladesh got some solace as Erwee tried to drive away for a boundary but instead nicked behind as Khaled Ahmed took his first wicket of the match.

Erwee's soft dismissal saw him depart for 24 off 40 balls (including four fours), giving the tourists some much-needed confidence.

Despite the lack of wind, the ball continued to swing, but Elgar remained vigilant alongside Keegan Petersen.

On a lighter and more peculiar note, Elgar was seen sporting a white bandage on his forehead right above his right eye after slipping in the bathroom earlier this week.

On one occasion, Elgar had to call for help on his bandage, but the Proteas skipper dug in and notched his 22nd Test half-century.

Elgar brought up his 50 from 66 balls as he recorded his third consecutive half-century in the series.

The in-form Proteas skipper also shares an unbeaten 55-run partnership with Petersen, who has slowly settled in at the crease.

Elgar will resume on 59* and Petersen on 24* after lunch.

The Proteas already lead the two-match Test series 1-0 after their 220-run win in Durban last week.
