Bangladesh left in tatters as Proteas edge closer to Test series win

The Proteas have batted their way to a comfortable position and are on the verge of victory after day three of the second Test against Bangladesh at St George's Park in Gqeberha on Sunday.

Bangladesh requires 386 runs to win after ending Day 3 on 27/3.

After resuming on 139/5 overnight, Bangladesh clawed their way back into the Test match as they looked untroubled in the first hour.

A 70-run partnership between Yasir Ali and Mushfiqur Rahim proved to be a thorn in the Proteas' side but Keshav Maharaj provided a much needed breakthrough.

Maharaj broke the partnership as Ali was caught and bowled for a well-played 46 off 87 balls.

Rahim then went on to bring up his 25th Test half-century off 134 balls but soon perished just before lunch as spinner Simon Harmer bowled him for 51 off 136 balls.

Bangladesh only added seven runs after lunch as Harmer and Maharaj ran through the tail.

Taijul Islam tried to attack Harmer but was caught at mid-off for 5. Maharaj got into the action again as Mehidy Hasan Miraz tried to slog-sweep, only to be caught in the deep for 11.

The following over saw Ebadot Hossain caught off the bowling of Harmer as the spinner took three wickets for 39. All-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who starred with the ball on Day 2 posted the best bowling figures for the Proteas with 3/25.

Dean Elgar chose not to enforce the follow on and looked to extend South Africa's lead, which was already at 236 runs.

A 60-run opening stand between Elgar and Sarel Erwee took the game away from the tourists but eventually ended as Elgar tried to reverse sweep Taijul Islam, who took six wickets in the first innings, to be bowled for 26 off 29 balls.
