‘Imminent’ – Wigan player update emerges amid links to Portsmouth and Preston

Portsmouth and Preston North End target Tom Pearce is set to stay at Wigan and sign a new contract with the League One club, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The 23-year-old’s current deal with the Latics expires in the summer and has drawn links with a move away from the club this month – with both Pompey and Preston linked the left-back.

Nixon has reported, however, that Pearce will be staying at the DW Stadium and his new contract with the club is “imminent”.

Injuries have hampered the defender progress since joining the North West club from Leeds United in 2019 but he has produced some impressive performances over the past month or so – helping Leam Richardson’s side maintain their promotion push.

The Latics are top of the League One table as things stand – level on points with Sunderland but with four games in hand over the Stadium of Light outfit.

The Verdict

This is fantastic news from a Wigan perspective because Pearce has been in great form over the past month or so and at just 23, looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

Injuries have been an issue for him since his move to the Latics but he’ll be hoping that with a clean bill of health, he can establish himself under Richardson.

This update is undoubtedly a blow for Pompey, Preston, and anyone else that might’ve been keen on a move for the defender.

His contract situation meant that Wigan would have to consider any significant bids made but it now appears that with a new deal imminently, the pursuit of the 23-year-old is off.
