Immelman questioned PGA Tour over Oosthuizen's Presidents Cup ban: 'We play by the rules'

International captain Trevor Immelman says he asked the PGA Tour whether SA's top-ranked golfer, Louis Oosthuizen, could've gotten a reprieve to play at this week's Presidents Cup.

Before making his six captain's picks, Immelman tried to get clarification from the PGA Tour if any International LIV players could partake in the biennial tournament.

The Presidents Cup is a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, but considering that several international players do not own PGA Tour cards, it could've been possible for players to earn their place if they compete on other tours like DP World Tour, Sunshine Tour and Asian Tour.

However, considering the PGA Tour's stance against LIV golfers, and more so Oosthuizen being one of the first golfers to help promote the breakaway rebel tour, the 2010 Open winner is not allowed to compete at Quail Hollow.

"I did (question Oosthuizen's participation). And my understanding is that he made particular announcements and allowed himself to be used in different marketing campaigns and announcements once he was not given the release from the PGA Tour, and he did all of those things before he resigned his membership. So there were still particular infractions there," Immelman told reporters in a press conference on Tuesday.

"This event is owned and sanctioned by the PGA Tour, and our team is a team that plays by the rules. We're a team of our word. We're a team of honour. So that's where we're at.

"And every single player that I spoke to from early on in this process knew exactly what the situation and the consequences were going to be.
