Imane Khelif next fight as Algerian gender row boxer at centre of Olympic controversy
Imane Khelif is set to be back in the ring at the Paris Olympic Games on Saturday after the gender row boxer booked a quarter final place amid huge controversy.
The Algerian boxer's last 16 bout against against Angela Carini was called off by the Italian just 46 seconds into the first round after Carini was on the end of two huge shots, one of which appeared to knock off her chin strap. Carini left the ring in tears and later confirmed her reasons for pulling out, saying: "I took the second blow to the nose and it hurt so bad, I didn't feel like continuing. Did I let myself be influenced by the media case? No, I was here to win my Olympics. Giving up was a gesture of maturity, not of surrender."
Going into the games in Paris, Khelif, 25, had been at the heart of a huge scandal that centred around her eligibility to compete in the women's boxing event. She was disqualified from last year's Women's World Boxing Championships in India after testing positive for high levels of testosterone that exceeded the amount allowed to participate in the tournament.
According to feminist website Reduxx, Khelif is affected by Difference of Sexual Development (DSD), which is a series of medical conditions identified at birth where genitalia is atypical in relation to chromosomes. The International Boxing Association (IBA) issued a statement on Wednesday, justifying Khelif's participation in the games following 'a meticulous review'.
Despite the controversy, the welterweight will now continue her pursuit of an Olympic medal when she takes part in one of Saturday's four quarter-final meetings against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Khelif is expected to take to the ring at 4.22pm UK time.
