Ikoyi Club agog as Club Championship gets underway

Golf Section, Ikoyi Club, 1938,

The Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938 is agog with festivities as the 2023 edition of the yearly its Club Championship, one of its longest running golf tournaments, gets underway today. It will end on January 14, 2024, organisers of the event has revealed.

The competition, which is open to golfers with handicap range of 14, is expected to produce a winner who would be crowned as the Club’s champion.

To be played over 36 holes, the competition is expected to be a keenly contested tournament. Though a competition of this nature throws up the most unlikely winner, but analysts believe that low handicap players and golfers with better course management ability hold the ace.

Some of the stars tipped for the crown are Mike Makinde, Tim Ayomike, Peter Eben-Spiff, Tunji Adebayo and Ewi Akpata.

The competition will officially tee off today with Ladies, Veterans and Men of handicap-15 and above.

Tomorrow’s action will feature gentlemen golfers in their opening round, while the grand finale will hold on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the competition, Chairman, Organising Committee of the event, Peter Eben-Spiff, thanked Nigerian Breweries, the tournament sponsor, for their support for the tournament, saying the company’s support is well appreciated.

The Club Championship is important competition in most clubs’ calendar because it determines the best amateur golfer within the club.
