Ikoyi agog as 39 teams battle for honours at 120th Lagos polo festival

Organisers of the Lagos International Polo Tournament have assured fans of a great event featuring some of the best players of the game from across the world.

The 120th edition of the event, tagged 2024NPA/ GTCO Lagos International Polo Tournament, gallops off today, is featuring a record 39 teams jostling for top honours in different categories of the game.

Fully armed with foreign professionals and fortified with thoroughbred Argentine horses, the teams are competing for honours in four major cups categories, including The Open Cup, The Majekodunmi Cup, The Lagos Low Cup and the Silver Cup.

For the first time in the rich history of the international polo festival, the glamorous event would be decided over four weeks of bumper-to-bumper polo action, with five equally-matched teams jostling for the Open Cup glory from today to January 28.

Speaking on the tournament, yesterday, Bode Makanjuola, declared that the club put everything on ground to make the 120th edition truly special. Also speaking on the festival, the Polo Captain, Muyiwa Oni, said the highly revered Majekodunmi Cup will take the centre stage from January 30 to February 4, with four teams from Lagos and Abuja battling for the top prize, while the third week, beginning from February 6 to 11, willsee 16 teams drawn from major polo centres across the country locked in battle for the Low Cup.

The final week will see a crowd of 14 equally matched low-goal teams slugging it out for the Silver Cup from February 13 to 18 in what promises to be a fitting cap to Africa’s richest polo extravaganza, he said.
