Ikorodu City bask in newfound form as El Kanemi Warriors rue missed chances

The dust has settled on the Mobolaji Bank Anthony Stadium, where Ikorodu City FC secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over El Kanemi Warriors on Wednesday. But as the team celebrate their win, the aftermath of the match has seen a mix of reactions from both camps.

Ikorodu City FC’s Coach Nurudeen Ayeworo beamed with pride as he reflected on the team’s performance, which mirrors his team’s latest performances home and away in the 14-week-old 2024/25 NPFL season.

“First, I want to give thanks to Almighty God. The match wasn’t easy; it was a tough match because playing against  a team that is in third position on the table was never going to be easy.”

The team’s players were also ecstatic about the win. Harrison Austin Uzondu, who played a crucial role in the match, noted that the team’s strategy and mindset were key to their success. “Yeah, I knew we would be victorious, but I knew that it would be kind of hard at first.”

On the other hand, El Kanemi Warriors’ Captain George Matthew was left ruing a disallowed goal that he felt changed the course of the match. “I think they
played better and got the result, even though they disallowed a goal, which was a goal,” he said.

Despite the disappointment, Matthew remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. “It’s football; you win, you lose, and you draw. Just because we lost today doesn’t mean we won’t go home and re-strategize.”

Both teams are looking to the future, as El Kanemi Warriors will face Bayelsa United next, while Ikorodu City FC will clash with Akwa United in their next game.
