Iceland to begin closing stores across the UK next week - with Marks and Spencer to follow

Supermarket giant Iceland is set to close stores across the UK next week. The frozen food retailer has announced several of its stores will be shutting their doors for good.

The news comes after several other retailers announced store closures. New Look, Boots, B&Q and TK Maxx are all shutting shops.

Banking giants Lloyds and Halifax are also set to shut banks, while Wetherspoons and Byron Burger are closing some chains.

Not all of the stores have an exact date for when they will close their doors and redundancy plans for workers are still not clear. These are the stores set to close this year, according to reports in the Sun, with some due to shut as early as next week.

Iceland is a major UK retailer with 500 branches of the supermarket chain nationwide and a further 153 outlets of their Food Warehouse brand. Unfortunately Iceland are not the only major retailer set to chose sites in the near future with shoppers due to see big chances as major high street brands shut up shop.

A perfect storm of sky-high energy prices, and an accelerated move to online shopping by consumers in the wake of the pandemic means bricks and mortar retailers are feeling the pinch. The impact of the cost of living crisis on UK household incomes is another factor in reduced spending, reports the Mirror.

Marks and Spencer is proposing the closure of a number of stores across the UK months after its announcement of 67 larger shop closures. The company is planning for changes to be complete in five years, although this could be reduced to three, as it aims to save around £309million in rent costs.
