Ian Wright loves Stoke City but is not impressed by grandson D'Margio's goal celebration

There can't be many young footballers in the world at the moment with more eye-catching pedigree than D’Margio Wright-Phillips.

The diminutive forward joined Stoke City from Manchester City in January 2021 hoping to follow his dad Shaun and grandad Ian Wright into the professional game – and Premier League.

Now aged 20, he immediately gave glimpses of his potential with Kevin Russell’s under-23s and trained with the first team during pre-season last summer, joining Michael O'Neill squad for a training camp in Northern Ireland. He was rewarded with his senior debut in the FA Cup third round win over Leyton Orient and went on to make 12 appearances in the second half of last season - and has now agreed a new contract befitting of his first team status.

This three generations came together to make a short film, produced by Barclays as part of Black History Month in October, covering his progress and hopes – as well as worries about everything from pressure and an eye-catching celebration to racism.

It starts with Wright Sr, aged 58, joining his son Shaun, aged 40, driving to Clayton Wood, saying: “The fact is, one of the things that I worry about most in my life at the moment is D’Margio and how he’s getting on.

“It’s nice that we’re going up to Stoke.

“And plus now, Stoke, obviously because my grandson’s there are one of my favourite teams in the whole world. I love Stoke. I love Stoke, bro. I’m loving Stoke man, I love Stoke.”

He added: “I think about it all the time. The pressure of a grandad, a dad, an uncle all playing in the Premier League. Dad, grandad won the Premier League.

“Now people are seeing what’s happening with him.”
