Saudi rebel Ian Poulter suffered humiliation - a day after winning his legal battle to play in the Scottish Open.
The Ryder Cup legend had a nightmare first round at the Renaissance Club near North Berwick where carded eight over. Poulter riled his fellow pros on the DP World Tour by defecting to the $1.2billion (£999m) Saudi-funded LIV Golf Series with huge prize money and guaranteed appearances fees being banked.
LIV golfers were banned from competing in the Genesis Scottish Open as part of golf ’s civil war between the rival organisations, but Poulter won a legal battle to be included in the field. Rory McIlroy said LIV players were taking a “have cake and eat it” attitude by wanting the best of both worlds.
Other players have raged at the inclusion of four LIV stars at the Scottish Open. But Poulter finished the opening day 153rd. As the wind got up for the afternoon starters Poulter suffered, missing putts and making nine bogeys.
“It is not an easy process to go through, it has been exhausting,” he said of his legal fight to play. Poulter insists he will play at the BMW Championship at Wentworth later this season and may add more events away from LIV because of his indefinite PGA Tour ban.
He is set to play in the third LIV event in New Jersey in three weeks. He said there have been no hard feelings from rivals in the locker room, but yesterday’s flop may have raised eyebrows.
