Ben Foster helped break the internet this week when he agreed to come out of retirement to join Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at Wrexham.

The 39-year-old had already received an offer to join the National League side last summer, but turned it down as he looked to focus on his own business ventures.

They weren't the only side he rejected, either. Foster turned down the chance to sign for Newcastle amid their own goalkeeping crisis last year, and could have ended up playing against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final had he taken it. He also held talks over a possible move to the MLS, as well as the possibility of joining his boyhood club Tottenham on an emergency loan deal, though it wouldn't be sanctioned by the Premier League.

Instead, he looked to focus on his off-field commitments, but when a fresh approach from Wrexham came earlier this week, he couldn't say no any longer.

The Welsh side are top of the National League table and eight games away from a famous promotion back to the Football League after a 15-year absence, but they face an injury crisis of their own.

First-choice goalkeeper Rob Lainton has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering knee ligament damage in the weekend win at Bromley, and back-up Mark Howard has been out of the team following a costly error in their recent 2-2 draw with Maidenhead United.
