I was Man City manager for one game - it left Pep Guardiola furious

Mikel Arteta has stepped out of Pep Guardiola's shadow to stand as one of the best coaches in the Premier League.

Manchester City were quickly convinced that Arteta had what it took to make it to the top when he joined Guardiola's staff as a rookie in 2016, settling seamlessly into his first coaching role. Having played his part in a record-breaking Premier League win in 2018, Guardiola's No.2 Domenec Torrent was more than happy to hand the reins over to Arteta as he left to coach New York City FC.

"Mikel is a clever man. [Coach City] after Pep? Why not," he said that summer. "He can train Manchester City, Arsenal, or Manchester United - he is able to become a top coach in the Premier League."

Arsenal came calling in 2019 in the hours after City had embarrassed them 3-0 at the Emirates, following Arteta back up to Manchester to ask him to make them competitive again. It has paid off emphatically, with the Gunners pushing City all the way in the last two Premier League title races and establishing themselves as a Champions League club again following a few years in the wilderness.

However, as he returns to the Etihad again on Sunday the former No.2 is still searching for a win at the ground as a coach. Not only is he winless in six matches against City with Arsenal - losing five - but he missed out on a golden opportunity when still under Guardiola.
