'I was fed up with hangxiety after drinking - my life feels more colourful since I became tee-total'

Your 20s are a time for living it up, figuring out what you want to do in life and making memories with your friends and family. A big part of having fun in your first decade of being an adult involves, for many, nights out and with that of course - drinking.

Club nights, pub quizzes and after-work pints - drinking culture in the UK is a big part of socialising, especially for many young people and university students. But new research from a YouGov survey shows 39 per cent of 18-24-year-olds are not drinking alcohol at all, showing a major shift in the drinking habits of young Brits.

One woman paving the way for many sober curious twenty-something-year-olds is Sarah Glover-Smith who has been tee-total for nearly two years. The 26-year-old, from Altrincham, was a “typical university student” who went out three to four times a week.

Sarah says she grew tired of the “same old routine” of going out as well as the hangxiety she experienced the day after drinking. But the fear of missing out on hanging out with her friends was too much for the student to stop drinking.

“Gradually going out went from being the most fun thing ever that I didn’t even question to something that took a toll on my mental health to the point it wasn’t worth it anymore. But I felt like if I stopped going out with my friends then I wouldn’t have any.
