'I wanted to still go on my holiday but the doctor said if I did I would die'

A mum-of-two is 'making the most of the time she has left' after receiving a devastating diagnosis.

Gemma Bertie was first diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of just 21, the Liverpool Echo reports. A decade later, after going into remission, she started suffering with 'severe' back pain and a secondary cancer was found in her spine.

The now 32-year-old was later given the devastating news that the cancer was incurable after spreading to her bones. Gemma's two daughters Evangeline, three, and Eleanor, two, are 'unaware their mum will leave them soon forever'.

When Gemma was first diagnosed with cancer at 21 she had been suffering with symptoms for around two years before she went to A&E with a fever. Doctors initially believed she had pneumonia and she was kept in hospital overnight and given antibiotics, while being urged to return if she was still having problems once the prescribed course of medication had been completed.

Gemma previously told the ECHO: "So I went back [to hospital] because I was still having problems and at first they thought an X-ray was showing pleurisy [sharp chest pain]. They said it probably wasn't cancer because I was too young."

Gemma, originally from Kirkby and living in Huyton, was later diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare form of cancer which commonly develops in the salivary glands or other regions of the head and neck. The hair stylist previously said: "I was on my own and a lovely doctor asked if there was anyone with me.

"My mum was in the car park but I said I was fine - and they called a specialist nurse to come in. I asked why she was holding my hand and then they gave me the news.
